(VNAC) - Ranked by Forbes Magazine as the 17th most powerful woman in the world (2009), France's Minister of Finance Christine Lagarde takes office today, July 5, 2011, as managing director of the International Money Fund (IMF), one of the most influential positions in global finance. Formed in 1944, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is an organization of 187 countries, whose stated missions are "to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world."

A noted leader, Ms. Lagarde was also France's Minister of Agriculture (2007) and Minister of Commerce & Industry (2005-2007). She graduated from law school at University Paris X and obtained a master's degree in political science from the Institut d'études politiques d'Aix-en-Provence.

Born in Paris on January 1, 1956 as Christine Madeleine Odette Lallouette, the new chief of IMF came from an intellectual family: her father Robert Lallouette was a professor of English at the Faculty of Rouen and her mother Nicole was a teacher. Christine Lagarde is a Roman Catholic. She is also a vegetarian and a teetotaler.

Ms. Christine Lagarde was a member of the French national synchronized swimming team in her adolescence. She has two sons, Pierre-Henri Lagarde (born 1986) and Thomas Lagarde (born 1988). Her hobbies are yoga, scuba diving, swimming, and gardening. She loves roses. 

Ms. Lagarde plans to bike to work in Washington, DC, USA. She said in an interview, "One concern that most countries share is how to create jobs, especially for young people. We have to make sure that we can build the macroeconomic environment to create enough jobs to give young people the expectation that there is hope for them in the world."

Bà Lagarde là một nhà lãnh đạo nổi tiếng, từng phục vụ trong vai trò Bộ trưởng Nông nghiệp (2007) và Bộ trưởng Thương mại & Kỹ nghệ (2005-2007) của Pháp. Bà tốt nghiệp luật khoa từ đại học Paris X và có bằng thạc sĩ khoa học chính trị từ Institut d'études politiques d'Aix-en-Provence.

Chào đời tại Paris vào ngày 1 tháng 1 năm 1956, nhủ danh Christine Madeleine Odette Lallouette, vị tân giám đốc IMF đến từ một gia đình trí thức: Robert Lallouette, thân phụ bà là giáo sư Anh ngữ tại Rouen, trong khi Nicole, mẫu thân bà, là một giáo viên. Bà Christine Lagarde là người Công giáo. Bà cũng là người trường chay và hoàn toàn không uống rượu.

Trong thời niên thiếu, Christine Lagarde là thành viên trong đội bơi đồng bộ của quốc gia Pháp. Bà có hai người con trai, Pierre-Henri Lagarde (sinh năm 1986) và Thomas Lagarde (sinh năm 1988). Các sở thích của bà là yoga, lặn biển, bơi lội, và làm vườn. Bà rất yêu hoa hồng.

Bà Lagarde dự định sẽ đi làm ở Hoa Thịnh Đốn, Hoa Kỳ bằng xe đạp. Bà phát biểu trong một buổi phỏng vấn: "Một vấn đề mà đa số các quốc gia đều quan tâm, đó là làm sao để tạo việc làm, nhất là cho những người trẻ. Chúng ta phải bảo đảm rằng có thể xây dựng một môi trường kinh tế vĩ mô để tạo đủ việc làm, để những người trẻ tuổi có thể trông mong rằng còn hy vọng cho họ trên thế giới."
